Upcountry offers various reasons for its appeal, but generally it’s the rural lifestyle in a cooler climate setting. For those who want a residential type community, Haliimaile, Makawao and Pukalani are options. For those who want a more rural/agricultural lifestyle, Olinda and especially the areas of Kula and Ulupakalua are most attractive to many. Makawao is the older town with a cowboy town appeal and history while Pukalani was developed more extensively in the 1970’s with a mini shopping center and an 18 hole golf course. Kula is considered our main farm belt of Maui while both Kula and Ulupalakua offer beautiful pastoral settings with many large and small cattle ranches scattered throughout. With elevations averaging around 2,000 ft but up to 4,000 ft, this crisp air with west facing sunset views is hard to beat for many. And believe it or not, it snows every few years at the top of Haleakala Crater.
